Sculpinocchio

(USD Sculpin)

No, It's not another type of coffee! I have been tying a few meat feast flies for the upcoming trout season on the bigger rivers. The brutes of the river will be lying in deeper and slower water looking for serious protein until the water warms up and they move into shallower streams as the insect activity increases. Until then I will be dredging the bottom with big, suggestive baitfish imitations, slamming it into every pig-hole after a giant brown. This is my first line of attack come opening day, the Sculpinocchio. It's constructed entirely from Hends Lama hair, with a few strands of flash, and a couple of barred rubber legs, Twitchy McSculpin for the win! A 5mm orange tungsten bead smacks it down to the deck ASAP and adds a sweet-spot for the fish to hit. The eyes are two drops of Loon UV Fly Finish hit with the lamp and colored with a black sharpie, and a few obligatory stripes are added with a dark sienna Pro-Marker. Fish this on some sort of sinking line to suit wherever you're fishing, usually a Di3 (heavier if you drop the bead), target the slower water and along the banks and retrieve in short bursts like a fleeing Sculpin.
