"Gobble Gobble"
Heres an easy tie that has been hammering fish recently fished singly on a french leader in the low water. I reckon it would clean up a mess of trout in a dry-dropper set up but I've been limited to single fly only in preparation for the world's next month in Italy. I must admit to being bitten by the coq de leon bug and putting it in most nymphs and drys with a tail, it's just such a sexy feather! I'm also on the lookout for a speckled badger saddle which is remarkably reminiscent of coq de leon, for use as a hackle on dries and the like because the CDL fibres are just a bit massive.. The turkey biots are a shweet fibre alright, they form animal segmented abdomens and the fine fibre coming off the edge resembles the gills present on many aquatic beasties. This one's a callibatis but dont be afraid to experiment with other colours like brown, olive, orange... whatever floats your boat! The thorax is a bit of a find, I managed to come across a pine squirell skin from the late Rod Tye at a fraction of normal price earlier in the year at the citywest show in dublin. The fur is quite fine and has lovely barring, imitating the beasties legs well. As usual the head is a lump of copper tungsten to get it down in the drink, and the addition of a bit of flash over the thorax works well in rivers that dont look like the outflow from the Smirnoff factory, but be sure to hide these flies away from magpies like Kieron Jenkins...
